In the early 1990's, I worked as a marketing manager for an upscale toy and gift company. One year I attended the massive New York Gift Show at the Javits Center with the company's lead designer, Suzi. After just a few minutes of walking the show, Suzi put her head down and raced toward the exit, mumbling to herself: “too much stuff…too much stuff…too much stuff.”

Putting the blinders on and heading for the exit was an appropriate survival mechanism for the Gift Show. I also find it to be an essential tool for maintaining sanity in the internet age.

It’s so easy for me to get lost in a sea of information and advice on any subject I explore online. What starts as healthy curiosity often ends in information-overload stupor: "too much information...too much information." When this starts to happen, I try to follow Suzi’s example by shutting my browser and getting back to work. I usually find that I already have all the information I need. Anything more than that is just "too much stuff."
